About the distillery
Springbank distillery is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts. The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre peninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky.
Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step in the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit, on same premises: the other is Kilchoman Distillery who also grow their own barley. While a few others still maintain the first step in the process, the malting of barley (which is becoming more rare), Springbank also bottles their own whisky.
Three variants of single malt are produced from its distillery by tweaking the production process at various stages;
Springbank Single Malt is the most popular variety, Longrow Single Malt is a highly-peated, double-distilled whisky and Hazelburn Single Malt, the newest variety.
Other Information
This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Springbank single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1998.
Originally filled with Springbank spirit on 20th November 1998, the whisky has since been maturing in a hogshead (cask number 400) which is currently held in bond at the Springbank distillery.
The cask was regauged on 21st February 2024 summarising the following:
- Original bulk 263 litres | Original strength 63.9% ABV | 168 LOA
- New bulk 163.7 litres | New strength 48.9% ABV | 80.8 RLA (Regauged Litres of Alcohol)
This would currently yield approximately 233 x 70cl bottles of 25 Year Old Springbank.
Unofficial Tasting Notes:
COLOUR:
Light yellow gold.
NOSE:
Starts off soft on the nose with whisps of tropical fruits and coconut. There is a slight salinity that cuts through so as to counteract any over sweetness. Also shining through is a touch of sea air, that builds the bouquet with exceptional salt and ozone that is wonderfully cleansing.
PALATE:
The palate echoes the nose, but with much more intensity. There are layers upon layers, as you would expect from this revered distillery: minerality adds to the costal notes; then the spice begins to build with ginger and clove; and finally, there is the drying tobacco leaf notes from the oak. All these layers wash over the tropical fruits with a refreshing urgency.
BODY:
A large malt that fills and coats the mouth.
FINISH:
Dries beautifully from the oak, with the tingle of ginger flattering the tropical fruits. Finally, the tobacco leaf and spice heat the cool coastal elements.
IMPORTANT:
- Springbank distillery require the cask be removed from their warehouse within 90 days of the transfer of ownership.
- Any storage and/or cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.
- Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer. Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.
- Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond. The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.
- Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required). The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.
- Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business or private individual connected to the trade), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
Consumer protection laws do not apply to purchases from private sellers. More specifically, the right to reject (section 20 of the Consumer Rights Act) does not apply. Buyer's rights are significantly reduced when a sale is carried out between two individuals. Goods from private sellers do not have to be fault-free and if defects or marks were clearly mentioned in our description and lot photos, then you do not have a case against the seller. However, if the seller's goods do not match the description, you have the right to ask for a refund on return of the goods to us.
